The Crossroads of Europe" - throughout history Belgium has been recognized as a centre of commercial and cultural exchange. For centuries, it has been focal point of trade and much of what Belgium is today is thanks to the central role it has played in Western Europe. As well as the predominant French and Dutch, flavors of the Austrian and Spanish, can be found in its architecture and in people. Its capital, Brussels has a population of around 1 million, nearly a third of which is composed of foreigners, making it a truly multi-cultural and multi-lingual city. The two official languages of Brussels are French and Flemish and all road signs are written in both. However, French is by far the more dominant language of the region. English is becoming the increasingly accepted language for business.
