Step between Pimlico's tall townhouses through a hidden courtyard and into a whole new world. The coach house for the mansion next door, Cambridge Street is a farmhouse in miniature. There's a rustic gentility to this home and oil paintings, antique furniture and some gorgeous tapestries all tell of grandeur with no delusions. With exquisite attention to detail, and an abundance of welcoming touches, if you're looking to experience traditional English life, then this is where you'll find it.
Your hostess divides her time between this, her London home, and visits to her son and daughter in South Africa and Norfolk. She has lived at Cambridge Street for fifteen years, and before she took up residence, it was used as an art school.
Outside, you've a private courtyard, with mature trees, tangled roses and garden furniture. Inside, pass the handy cloakroom and move on into the sitting room. With views of the church opposite, fine old furniture and comfortable textiles, you could as easily be in a country village as in London. The walls hold a stunning collection of oil paintings, and the beautiful writing desk makes work a positive pleasure.
The ivory kitchen's compact and well equipped, and you've the cottagey delight of a pantry under the stairs. Upstairs, the master bedroom holds a king sized bed, and more lovely art work, while the single bedroom next door is filled with sunshine and books. Cambridge Street is set back from the road, and you've no traffic noise to disturb you, so take a long bath with our White Company toiletries and drop into delicious sleep.
Residential Pimlico is a quiet part of town, with white houses, wide streets and a relaxed air. You've corner shops and pubs close by, and Tate Britain and the Thames are within a short walk. If you want a bit more of a buzz, head up to Victoria, where you've all the shops and restaurants you could possibly want, and from there, it's just a handful of minutes more to Buckingham Palace and Green Park. And if you want to hit the West End, the tube from Victoria to Oxford Circus takes only four minutes!
