A cottage is a thing of the countryside. You know, the ones wistfully dreaming the decades away as birds sing against their thatched roof and a cathedral chimes the quarter over the chimneypots. Well, not in this case. Grenfell Road is a cottage of surpassing sweetness that just happens to be in the city. It also happens to be the perfect hideaway, cosy, quaint and freshly refurbished. Shafts of sunlight play on its small garden, and the kitchen displays a warmly rustic charm. Then, step outside to find yourself just minutes away from Notting Hill's villagey yet wholly vivacious buzz.
Your hostess is a writer and long term Notting Hill resident whose love of the area inspired her to write a series of locally set detective novels. If you look closely you can find them amongst the books on the shelves...
Along a quiet cul-de-sac sits this small, sweet retreat. Start by flumping into the sitting room, a distinctly elegant space with the most cushy of sofas. Books line the shelves, light streams through the bay window and the walls are a crisp white. Then, when it's time for dinner, tread over the rug into the kitchen. From the terracotta floor tiles to the wooden worktop and vintage chest of drawers, you'll feel like you're in a farmhouse especially with the garden just outside. Four can eat at the rustic dining table before you ease open those doors and mingle with the flowerpots.
The bedroom is fresh and cloud-bright, its white walls happily hung with bird-themed artwork. Beside the period furniture is the handsome double bed, dressed in our luxury linen. You'll find the bathroom to be modern, shiny and well-stocked with White Company goodies.
Not only are you in the city, but an especially fine corner of it. Wander one way to find the sumptuous shopping at Westfield, wander the other to find Portobello Road and all the restaurants and bars of Notting Hill. Catch a film at the Coronet Cinema, saunter around pretty Holland Park or just zoom into town. The tube from Holland Park to Oxford Circus takes a mere ten minutes.
